Danny Tenaglia in NYC
Wow, after seeing Sven Vath 2 days before, I thought it couldn't get any better. . . .

Well it's my last night in New York and I've spent the last 3 hours talking about gun crime to some annoying yank in an Irish Bar in Time Sq. I'm bored, its midnight and I don't want to go back to my £300 hotel room, yes £300 pounds! Robert De-Nero's Film Festival is on and all the rooms are booked. So I jump in a cab and go down the West Side again and see what Pacha has got to offer. . .

So I queue up with the 4,000 Japanese and Chinese people and start smoking a fag. A guy instantly comes up with a clipboard and is checking the crowd for drunks, badly dressed people and people without I.D. (me!). I liked this; there is nothing more annoying than queuing up for an hour and then being told that you are wearing the wrong type of shoes (The Egg), it’s just too full inside, (The Cross) or any other lame excuse that doormen come up with. I tell him I have come all the way over just for this and he’s got to let me in (was a bit drunk at this point!), and he says if I give him $40 he let me in without I.D., but to be honest it would be better for me to go get a taxi and come back!

So 15 minutes later and a bit of queue jumping, I’m back to where I was with my passport. Mainly because the Doormen were annoyed that every one in the queue was Asian and they had taken over the whole line. Never have I seen discrimination work in my favour, they actually singled me out and said, “Come to the front!”

So after the $40 entrance fee, I start exploring the place and find it is a maze of 3-4 floors, lots of stairwells and an immense amount of Oriental people fooked out of their face, hugging each and swaying on the dancefloor like they are trying to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence. It was hilarious; it was like going to a school disco, but for fooked people. I even stood next to a bouncer laughing and he just shrugged his shoulders.

$7 for a beer, so I start wondering and find the outside bit for a cigarette as it’s always the best place to meet people. After another gun-debate I quickly moved on and bump into an English guy from Woking who works on Wall Street. COCK. Decide to stick to Americans.

At this point, I still don’t even know who is playing and as it’s already 12:30am and the place is filled with fluffy house on one floor and breaks dance stairs. I walk back to the main floor for 1am and . . . Danny Tenaglia’s there!!! Or maybe he was just playing shite before 1am and I just got there for him slamming some really amazing records on. Jesus wept.

I’ve never seen Danny play live before and I have to say, if you ever get a chance – do it!!!! He was awesome (I had to get that phrase into an American review)! He played the filthiest, hardest, progressive, tribal, FX house. It was mind blowing. It was one of those moments where you re-find the type of music that you like. It was truly that good. Once I had found a spot in the middle of the triads, the next few hours just disappeared as I was just caught up in it.

I bumped into the trader again and he took me into the V.I.P. bit of Pacha and I met some of his trader mates. After 30 minutes of taking the piss, I had to leave and get back on the dance floor, I could just hear Danny dropping another amazing tune and the crowd going wild and I was stood in VIP ripping the piss out of people. Just not right!

I must remember to start wearing a watch, as it was 6am now, it was due to close at lunchtime, my flight was at 11am and I hadn’t even slept in my £300 hotel room yet!! All I can say is thank god for Xanax on the flight back.

http://www.trackitdown.net/news/101288.html - this little article made me laugh – they wanted to shut Pacha as they found 5 Ecstasy tablets – bugger me you find more than that in a local Wetherspoons!

Nice review Ross!
(Altho I remember Tenaglia being pretty boring in Space Ibiza - but to be fair it was so rammed there wasn't enough room to put both feet down at once which hardly helps!!)

Nice write up mate, glad to hear you found DT enjoyable as i think the guy is a fucking house legend and have heard him play a few times over the years, highlight sets were in the Space discotheque 3 years ago and at Club Class @ Ministry of Sound a few months ago.
